OUR APPROACH TO TRIGGER FINGER

A full pathway of options. From injection to release.

What trigger finger actually is.

Trigger finger occurs when inflammation narrows the tendon sheath around a finger’s flexor tendon, causing the finger to catch, click, or lock in a bent position. It can affect any finger and is more common in people who perform repetitive gripping, in diabetics, and in middle-aged women. In severe cases, the finger may become stuck in a fully flexed position, requiring the other hand to straighten it.

Our approach: injection first, surgery if needed.

Surgical release isn’t always the right starting point. For most patients, a corticosteroid injection resolves the inflammation without further intervention. Where injection alone isn’t enough, ultrasound-guided injection or percutaneous (needle) release may be appropriate next steps. Surgical release is reserved for cases that haven’t responded to less invasive options. We progress through the pathway only as needed, the aim being to resolve your symptoms with the least invasive intervention that will actually work.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Four interventions, calibrated to your case.

Trigger finger responds to a range of interventions, depending on severity and how it’s progressed. Most patients resolve with injection alone; others need a combination of approaches; some require surgical release. Your consultation will assess which option is most appropriate for you, with surgery only recommended where less invasive options aren’t suitable or haven’t worked.

01

Corticosteroid injection.

The first-line treatment for most cases. A targeted anti-inflammatory injection into the tendon sheath that resolves the inflammation in around 70 to 80% of patients within 4 to 6 weeks.

02

Ultrasound-guided injection.

Where precision matters or first-line injection hasn’t fully resolved symptoms, ultrasound-guided injection delivers the corticosteroid with millimetre accuracy to the inflammation site.

03

Percutaneous (needle) release.

A minimally invasive technique using a fine needle to release the constricted tendon sheath. Performed under local anaesthetic, with faster recovery than surgical release.

04

Surgical tendon sheath release.

The definitive treatment where less invasive options haven’t worked or aren’t suitable. Performed as a day case under local anaesthetic, with greater than 95% long-term success rate.

What to expect

A single day-case appointment for surgical release

Surgical tendon sheath release is performed in our clinic as a day case, under local anaesthetic only. The procedure itself takes around 15 to 20 minutes. You'll be able to walk out of the clinic the same day, with light dressing on the operated finger and a follow-up plan for hand therapy and rehabilitation. Most patients resume light daily activity within days and return to full function within weeks.
