OUR APPROACH TO MOLE REMOVAL

Examined first, removed only if appropriate.

What a Health3 mole consultation involves.

Every mole consultation begins with dermoscopy assessment, a magnified examination of the mole using a clinical-grade dermatoscope. This lets the clinician evaluate the mole’s structural pattern, pigmentation, and any features that might warrant further investigation. The assessment itself is non-invasive, takes only a few minutes per lesion, and provides a clear clinical picture of whether removal is appropriate, which method would be best, and whether histological analysis is recommended.

Why histology matters.

Histology is the laboratory analysis of removed tissue, performed by a histopathologist who examines the cellular structure under a microscope. For lesions with atypical features, suspicious dermoscopy findings, or any concerning evolution in a patient’s history, histology is the only way to definitively confirm what the lesion was. We recommend histology for any lesion with atypical features, and the cost is discussed transparently at consultation. It’s the difference between “we removed it” and “we removed it, and here’s what it was.”

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

When to book an assessment urgently.

The ABCDE warning signs are a clinically established framework for identifying moles that should be examined as a matter of priority. If any of these apply to a mole on your skin, please book an assessment without delay.

A

Asymmetry.

Lifting heavy upper eyelids that close the appearance of the eye, the non-surgical alternative to blepharoplasty.

B

Border.

The edges are ragged, blurred, or unevenly defined.

C

Colour.

Multiple shades within the mole, or a colour that has changed over time.

D

Diameter.

The mole is larger than 6mm across (the size of a pencil eraser).

E

Evolution.

Any change in size, shape, colour, or elevation, or new symptoms like bleeding, itching, or crusting.

REMOVAL METHODS

Three methods, matched to your mole.

Different moles call for different removal approaches. Surgical excision is appropriate for most lesions and gives the cleanest cosmetic outcome. Shave excision suits raised benign moles where deeper tissue isn’t involved. CO2 laser ablation offers minimal-scarring removal for surface lesions. Your clinician will recommend the right method at your assessment, based on the mole’s depth, location, and whether histology is needed.

01

Surgical excision.

Full removal with suturing, performed under local anaesthetic. The most thorough method, appropriate for the majority of mole removals where deeper tissue evaluation matters.

02

Shave excision.

A precise shave-level removal of raised benign moles, performed under local anaesthetic. Faster healing than surgical excision, with minimal scarring on suitable lesions.

03

CO₂ laser ablation.

Targeted laser removal of surface lesions, performed under local anaesthetic. The minimal-scarring option for cosmetic removal of small surface moles where deeper investigation isn’t required.
