OUR APPROACH TO CARPAL TUNNEL

A full clinical pathway. Not just the surgery.

What carpal tunnel syndrome actually is.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel, the narrow passage in the wrist. It causes pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand and fingers that can significantly impact daily life, sleep, and work. Left untreated, severe cases can lead to permanent nerve damage and muscle wasting in the affected hand.

Assessment first, surgery only when needed.

Surgery isn’t always the right answer. Our pathway begins with proper clinical assessment, including nerve conduction studies where indicated, to confirm the diagnosis and grade severity. From there we tailor treatment to what your specific case needs: splinting, steroid injection, ultrasound-guided hydrodissection, or surgical release. We progress through the pathway only as needed. The aim is to resolve your symptoms with the least invasive intervention that will actually work.

SYMPTOMS WE TREAT

The signs to look out for.

Carpal tunnel syndrome usually starts with mild night-time symptoms and progresses gradually if untreated. Below are the most common symptoms we see at consultation. If any of these match what you’re experiencing, it’s worth booking an assessment, particularly if symptoms have been progressing or are affecting your sleep or work.

01

Numbness and tingling in thumb, index, and middle fingers.

The classic distribution of median nerve compression, often described as “pins and needles” affecting the first three and a half fingers.

02

Burning or aching pain in the hand and wrist.

Often felt deep in the wrist or radiating into the palm and forearm, particularly noticeable at rest.

03

Weakness when gripping or pinching.

Difficulty turning a key, opening a jar, or holding small objects firmly without dropping them.

04

Waking at night with hand discomfort.

Night-time symptoms that improve when shaking the hand are a hallmark sign of carpal tunnel.

05

Dropping objects due to loss of grip strength.

Progression to functional loss where the hand can no longer reliably hold what’s placed in it.

06

Symptoms worsened by repetitive hand use.

Worsening with computer work, manual tasks, driving, or any activity involving sustained gripping.

Initial clinical assessment with nerve conduction study where indicated. Conservative management with splinting and steroid injection. Ultrasound-guided hydrodissection where appropriate.
